On October 7, the Center for the National Interest hosted an event titled “Russia, Iran, and the War in Syria.” An expert panel discussed what Russia’s intervention and continued Iranian involvement in Syria mean for that country’s civil war. Panelists included Fellow for Royal United Services Institute Fellow Kamal Alam, American Enterprise Institute Resident Fellow Matthew McInnis, and Center Executive Director Paul Saunders. The panelists also debated U.S. policy toward Syria and the viability of the American position that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad must step down. Senior Fellow and Director of Middle East Studies Andrew J. Bowen moderated the event.
