Syria, Russia, and U.S. Policy

On November 18, the Center for the National Interest hosted an event on Syria, Russia, and U.S. Policy in the Middle East. An expert panel discussed the ongoing Syrian Civil War and the challenges posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. Panelists included Daniel Byman, a professor at Georgetown University and a top expert on the Islamic State, Al Qaeda and other extremist groups; Andrew Parasiliti, Director of the Center for Global Risk and Security at RAND, and the former Editor of Al-Monitor, with extensive experience in the Middle East; Dimitri K. Simes, President of the Center and a Russia specialist who has considerable experience in the Middle East and in Syria; Dov Zakheim, a former Under Secretary of Defense in the George W. Bush administration who worked closely with Israel and the Gulf States on security matters. Center Chairman Charles G. Boyd, a former combat pilot and retired four-star Air Force general with extensive experience with no-fly zones, moderated the event.
