Understanding and Responding to Russia: CIA Analysis and Operations

On May 22, the Center for the National Interest hosted a panel discussion entitled “Understanding and Responding to Russia: CIA Analysis and Operations.” Speakers included Milton Bearden, a 30-year CIA veteran, who was the CIA’s station chief in Moscow, Islamabad, and Khartoum and led the CIA’s covert support for the Afghan fighters who ousted Soviet forces; George Beebe, Director of Intelligence and National Security at the Center for the National Interest and a former head of the CIA’s Russia analysis and a former national security aide to Vice President Dick Cheney; and Dr. Peter Clement, a senior research fellow and adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, who recently retired from the CIA after extensive service including as Deputy Director of Intelligence and Analytic Programs and Director of the Office of Russian and Eurasian Analysis. Paul Saunders, Executive Director of the Center for the National Interest and a former State Department Senior Advisor in the George W. Bush administration, moderated.
