China and the Iran War (w/ Hani Findakly)
A lot of commentators have speculated on the geopolitics of the Iran War in terms of the strategic calculus of America and China. In the West, many experts have questioned what kind of signal the war sends in terms of America’s resolve around the world and its ability to sustain a wartime footing. In the East, some observers have asked whether the war was partially intended to apply pressure on China in terms of its oil imports. In either case, both sides have managed to adjust for the time being, with China redirecting domestically refined oil to local markets and America shifting materiel around the world to accommodate its needs. That situation may change if the war continues much longer, but for now the conflict has not had a serious impact on exacerbating the strategic competition between the superpowers.
In this episode, CFTNI Senior Fellow Joshua Yaphe speaks with Dr. Hani Findakly, an investment banker with 50 years of experience on Wall Street and in Washington, managing client portfolios and advising governments on Middle East affairs.
